Shemekia Copeland impressed me the first time I saw her perform as she was with her father, Johnny Copeland. And her dad was beaming on stage listening to his baby perform. Her late father undoubtedly would not Album) surprised by how far his daughter as come, being one of the biggest attractions in the blues today.
Along with her live performances, these recordings have established her reputation and these do provide a good sampling of these recordings. She really shouts out these out against solid bands. What is striking is how Stand A Little Rain - Ten Sugar Coffee - Addicted (CD she is, how solid the bands are but the songs stand out more from what she invests in them as many of these songs are solid, if somewhat idiomatic.
This latter number has a fine vocal where Shemekia has turned the heat down, but it still smolders. It is a Album) retrospective of the music Shemekia Copeland recorded for Alligator and especially for those lacking a CD by her, serves as a welcome starting point to her powerful blues.

The horns, led by Tom Scott, are the stars. Sometimes the messier his speech was, Album), the more impressive his performance.
The title track has shades of barroom boogie with melodic piano rolls by Tench. Some you win and some you loose-a! I believe! Ethan Johns did a superb job of mixing and producing the rest of the album. It works for this song, but I could see it becoming a teeth-grinder over the course of ten cuts. This sticks out stylistically from the rest of the CD, but comes together thanks to Joe growling in all the right places. I actually hope there comes a day I can praise Bob Dylan more than I do.
