Whereas their previous releases suffered too much from a glut of "big-name" guest appearances and not enough time LP together as a cohesive unit in the studio, this one features tight and mainly live performances of new material that was carefully looked over for final approval by Maurice himself during the recording sessions, Album).
Songwriting is strong throughout and continues to reflect the group's deeply spiritual side, which resonates ever so strongly now more than ever in these turbulent times. I'd say more, but other reviewers on here have pretty much taken care of that part for me more or less. Personally speaking, I'm just glad to see a widely loved and respected old-school group like EWF proving to the music world at large that they haven't completely emptied the tank yet.
More power to them for being able to pull that off in epic fashion on this release! So I'm the first person to hop Album) it when I hear about the impending release of a new EWF collection -- even after the passage of four decades! But I have to admit I didn't have particularly high hopes for the new project, given Maurice White's waning involvement in EWF and other changes in the musical scene that have rendered the super group less relevant over the years.
Wow, was I LP I have to disagree. It contained about five tracks too many and its foregrounding of guest artists diluted the EWF sound. Sometimes Album) really is more! They flow nicely into one another in terms of tempo, arrangement, and musical genre, setting an overall mood that represents a refreshing return to form for the Elements.
While Philip Bailey had a hand in writing most of the tracks, a talented group of names long associated with the super group e. I've listened to two of the collection's standout tracks, "Love is Law" and "Got to Be Love," alongside some EWF classics and the new tracks still sound good. Not an easy accomplishment! Both of these new tracks are simply irresistible. They both prominently feature Verdine White's thumping bass lines, Philip Bailey's seasoned falsetto, and the feel-good lyrics we have come to expect from EWF.
Like the great EWF collections of years past, I also find the other tracks -- e. I read in one review that to prepare themselves for creating this new collection, the remaining members of the group went back to their roots by closely studying the entire EWF discography. It shows. I'm grateful that in a popular music era dominated by digital media, marketing, and packaging, timeless musicians are still able to find the space to produce music with substance.
I've listened to EWF since early '70's as a tween, and this album did not disappoint me. Right out the gate with Sign on with its funky beat, to Love is Law of course Philip's vocals are just as strong and smooth as ever, of course sliding into Guiding Lights, which teased us for over a year and gave us a taste of good things to come.
Then God to be Love followed more than once I thought several tunes made me think of a familiar voice the one and only Maurice White which made me smile, because his vocals are so distinct and very noticeable.
