The tee shirt I'm wearing has holes in it. That's not because of anything I did. I haven't worn it while exercising or working in the yard. I no longer earn my living in a factory or at a construction site, so Death To My Hometown - Bruce Springsteen - The African Lion (CD) hasn't suffered from work-related stress. Overall I'd say I've been Death To My Hometown - Bruce Springsteen - The African Lion (CD) easy on it. But still it has holes in it.
Because of the kind of people that Bruce sings about in this amazing song. The company that makes my tee shirts once employed thousands Death To My Hometown - Bruce Springsteen - The African Lion (CD) people across the southern US, in dozens of textile mills.
For decades, hundreds of pairs of callused hands made durable, good-looking cotton shirts. They didn't get rich, but they did okay. The company owners did better, though they were far from multi-millionaires. Then other men showed up one day and took over the business. They had no calluses on their hands, and no love for the simple craft of weaving cotton fibers into clothes. Their only concern was money.
And, to make more of it, they destroyed the hopes, lives, and dreams of people Death To My Hometown - Bruce Springsteen - The African Lion (CD) had worked for decades in the mills. They moved their jobs to third-world sweat shops, where they forced children to labor countless hours in dangerous conditions.
But even that wasn't enough to satisfy their greed. Over time they cut corners, using cheaper, thinner grades of cloth. Why not? After all, it saved them a penny or two. Besides, they're not the sort who wear tee shirts anyway. And that's why my shirt has holes in it, because it's woven from junk fibers by third-world slaves. And the new owners of the company have grown obscenely rich, not by making good products, but by gutting the economic base of small-town America.
They've brought death to the towns where people like myself, and Bruce, and millions of other Americans grew up. But they will pay - if not from political and legal action, then in other ways. But, with God as my witness, they will most surely pay. Classic Springsteen style. Great song. I love that he incorporates instruments into his style that you don't normally hear in rock and this song does not disappoint on that regard.
The brass instruments, violin, and organ complement the guitar and drums well. I absolutely love Bruce! I definitely recommend this song to anyone who is a Bruce fan, Death To My Hometown - Bruce Springsteen - The African Lion (CD).
